Our History

Milestone Nurseries, founded in 2022 by Luke, represents a family legacy deeply rooted in the art of nurturing and cultivating plants. Born in the 1990s, Luke, the fourth generation of nurserymen in his family, became actively involved in horticulture in the early 2000s. His journey is intertwined with the remarkable history of his forebears.

The story begins with Luke's great-grandfather, John, who, like many smallholders in the area, cultivated cut flowers amid the agricultural landscape. John's use of greenhouses allowed him to grow not only cut flowers but also a diverse range of bedding plants. This pioneering spirit laid the foundation for what would become a thriving family enterprise.

Following in his great-grandfather's footsteps, John's son, Richard, transitioned the family's focus from farming to horticulture, along with his wife, Janet. Together, they founded "Milestone Cottage Nurseries," which grew into a successful venture, specialising in the cultivation of cut flowers and annual plants for wholesale markets.

As the 2000s dawned, the 4th generation, including Luke, eagerly stepped into the family tradition, embracing the art and science of horticulture. However, life took a turn in 2015 when Richard and Janet's health began to decline, leading to the cessation of Milestone Cottage Nurseries' operations. With the family business temporarily on hold and the grandchildren still too young to carry it forward, the nursery was eventually sold.

After a hiatus of seven years and the poignant passing of Richard, Luke decided to pursue his dream. He rekindled the family's horticultural legacy by establishing Milestone Nurseries, a direct link to his family's past. With a strategic shift away from wholesale markets and the emergence of online retail, the company now exclusively caters to online customers through its website and various third-party platforms.

Fast forward to 2023, and Milestone Nurseries stands proudly as a testament to Luke's dedication and commitment. They supply tens of thousands of plants and products annually to customers across the UK, while preserving and honouring the enduring legacy of generations past. The journey continues, guided by a profound love for horticulture and a determination to ensure that the family's traditions thrive into the future.
